Parks, Hotel Rooftops, and Beach Clubs: The Best Pools in NYC (1)

Whether you’re a high-maintenance lounger or a free-spirited splasher, summertime calls for long days spent in highly-chlorinated waters. And luckily in New York City, there’s a variety of ways to forgo melting on the sidewalks.

From chic sky-high destinations perfect for sipping on co*cktails in style to laidback bodies of water that don’t mind handstand competitions and games of Marco Polo, it’s a choose-your-own-adventure out here. With public pools opening at the end of June—potentially for two months longer than usual—and day-passes to private pools currently available, it's time to plan your next day at the pool in New York City.

Pools in Manhattan

Lower East Side, Free
A neighborhood well known for its renowned nightlife hotspots and rugged-turned-trendy aesthetic, the Lower East Side is also home to one of the biggest public pools in Manhattan. At the Hamilton Fish Pool, expect a laid back and pretension-free vibe. Although there’s no deck furniture, don’t let this deter you. Pack a couple of beach towels and claim a spot on the concrete band surrounding the pool.

NoMad, Reserved pool loungers $130 and up
The Virgin Hotels New York City is not only home to a lively restaurant and bar called Everdene—with an expansive terrace and a lively entertainment program most nights of the week—but also The Pool Club. While hanging at the rooftop oasis, hotel guests can treat themselves to a swim followed by boozy ice pops, specialty co*cktails, and light bites.

Governors Island, Admission $98 and up
Just an eight-minute ferry ride away from Lower Manhattan, QC Spa is a getaway sans extensive travel. Take some much-needed me time on Governors Island in one of two new infinity pools at the QC Spa. Not only are there panoramic views of Manhattan, Brooklyn, and New Jersey, but there are also luxurious features like underwater hydro seats and loungers that massage your body. Afterwards, there’s more than 20 spa treatments and experiences to choose from including saunas, meditation rooms, steam baths, and infrared beds.

Hamilton Heights, Admission $2
Along the East River, Riverbank State Park is a veritable aquatic oasis for swimmers. On property, dip your toes in both an Olympic-sized lap pool and a wading pool. Currently wrapping up renovations, the new bathroom and changing rooms are going to be debuted just in time for summer—temporary bathrooms are set up currently. Come with your cash (all it takes to get in is two bucks!), your swimsuit, and all your friends.

NoMad, Day passes at $95
The 20th floor of the Royalton Park Avenue Hotel not only flaunts stunning views of the Empire State Building, but also one of the best pools in Manhattan. Surrounded on one side with city views and the other by verdant, greenery-covered walls, the 40-foot pool is heated and accompanied by a chic sun deck. Non-hotel guests can reserve day passes (that include first come, first serve lounge chairs) or a poolside sofa. After 6 pm, the pool and deck turns into a rooftop bar.

East Harlem, Free
In our opinion, not being able to bring your phone or electronics onto any NYC public pool deck makes the experience that much more special. One of the best spots to disconnect from the outside world and kick back is at this Triboro Plaza haven. Snag a this summer’s beach read from a nearby indie bookstore and enjoy an afternoon filled with absolutely nothing but relaxation.

Pools in Brooklyn

Williamsburg, Daybeds $95 and up
Head through the lobby of the Coda Williamsburg hotel and you’ll find a verdant oasis dubbed the Beach Club. Through summer, take advantage of bright white-and-blue daybeds, tropical greenery, a poolside bar, and spacious cabanas. Sip on a La Chismosa passion fruit mimosa (a portion of this co*cktail’s sales go to the LGBTQ Center NYC during June) and snack on Zucchini Fries or Empanadas to round out a perfect pool day. For those tired of youngins splashing around and screaming, this is a completely adults-only pool.

Brownsville, Free
When British philanthropist Betsy Head passed in 1907, she left a bequest to the city under the agreement that they use it to improve the Brownsville local park. More than 100 years later, the Betsy Head Pool has been declared a New York City landmark and is a lasting testament to Head’s benevolence. The expansive Art Moderne-style pool is a favorite for locals looking to cool off when temperatures creep up.

Sunset Park, Free
Here’s a secret: One of the city’s best views of the Statue of Liberty is at Sunset Park’s pool. Set on top of the highest point in the park, guests can enjoy an rectangular, olympic-sized playground. We recommend enjoying the stellar panorama, splashing around, and setting up a picnic in the park before the sun sets.

Williamsburg, Reservations $200 and up
What’s most important to know about this spot, is that it’s one of the few hotels that offers pool access to non-guests (we love to see it). In addition to passes for loveseats, loungers, daybeds, and cabanas for the Vale Pool, non-hotel guests can tack on reservation for a sauna or hot tub wind down. After your swim, head upstairs to the Westlight rooftop bar for unparalleled views of the city and craft co*cktails.

Pools in Queens

Long Island City, Ticket prices vary
Whether you’re down for a staycation or just looking for a rooftop concert, Long Island City’s outdoor club, on the third floor of the Ravel Hotel, rewards New Yorkers with rowdy day-long fêtes. The ambiance is inspired by the wild and ostentatious day clubs of Miami and Las Vegas, so, naturally, there’s a lengthy pool to keep you cool between rounds of drinks. Only open during events, check out the schedule then reserve a daybed or cabana for listening to some of the top DJs from around the world and occasionally dipping your toes into the water.

Jamaica, Pool passes at $25
Going all the way to JFK Airport for a swim might sound crazy, but the TWA Rooftop Pool is worth it. Part of the retro-styled TWA Hotel, the pool sports a crisp white and red aesthetic plus captivating views of the airport’s tarmac. Hotel reservations are not required to snag a spot by the pool, but pre-planned reservations are a must. From 11 am–11 pm, visitors can watch planes jet off into the horizon, sip on chilled beverages from The Pool Bar, and soak up some Vitamin D.

Pools in The Bronx

Crotona Park, Free
Beating those inevitable summer heatwaves in The Bronx is made possible by this beloved Olympic-sized retreat. Tucked on the side of Crotona Park, Crotona Pool is the largest pool in the borough and an ideal spot to practice those competition-ready strokes. If it’s too toasty poolside, gather your belongings and take a breezy stroll along the park’s 3.3-acre lake.

Pools in Staten Island

Tottenville, Free
Staten Island swimmers can’t beat a day spent at Tottenville Pool. After an extensive renovation a few years ago, the concrete-covered area now features vibrant murals, a collection of lounge chairs, and wide umbrellas. At only 3.5-feet-deep, the Tottenville Pool is ideal for leisurely floating and mingling. While there might be pools closer to your apartment, a trip across the river on the Staten Island Ferry can almost make it feel like you’re going on vacation.
