Homemade Texas Toast
I’m a carb girl. If it’s bread or pasta, I’m all in! One of my weaknesses is a thick, buttery piece of homemade Texas Toast…I usually make it any time we have spaghetti or chili for dinner.
I used to buy the frozen store versions of this delicious garlic toast but once I learned just how easy it is to make homemade Texas Toast I never went back! It’s a money saver to make it yourself too and it only takes a few minutes! Without further ado, my favorite Homemade Texas Toast recipe.
What is Texas Toast?
Texas Toast is a thick, buttery garlic toast that is the perfect side for almost any meal!
Why do they call it Texas Toast?
Texas toastmay have been first created in 1946 at the Pig Stand in Denton,Texas, after a bakery order for thicker slices of bread resulted in slices too thick for the toaster and a cook, Wiley W. W. Cross, suggested buttering and grilling them as a solution.
I start with a fresh loaf of white bread from the bakery at my grocery store-it’s priced usually about $1.50 so not only is this route tastier, it saves me money on my grocery budget as well. You can also make it with Italian or submarine bread as well, I prefer the bread to be as fresh as possible for the best results.
How to Make Garlic Toast

Margarine can be substituted for butter without affecting the end result.

Preheat a griddle to medium heat. Cut the bread into 3/4" to 1" thick slices. Combine the garlic oil and melted butter, and spread it on both sides of each piece of bread. Fry the bread until golden brown on each side.
Both sides are buttered before it's placed on the grill or in a skillet to slightly brown. This combination results in a crunchy, toasted exterior that makes a perfect breakfast side. Unlike other breads that toast all the way through, Texas toast tends to have a soft and slightly moist interior.
About twice as thick as standard bread, ranging from three-quarters to one inch, Texas toast cooks up crispy on the outside, but extra soft on the inside. It's typically slathered with a hearty serving of butter (or margarine) before getting seared on a flat top grill until golden brown.
Typically, garlic bread is made with breads that have a hard crust (e.g. French bread, ciabatta, baguette). Texas toast is made by spreading butter on both sides of a slide of bread and broiling or grilling it until it is light brown – sometimes garlic is added to the butter as well.
I simply heat a medium-sized skillet over medium heat, and toast the bread directly in the pan. Just put the bread directly on the hot pan—I use a non-stick pan, so no butter or oil needed, but a well-seasoned cast-iron skillet would be great here too—and let it crisp and brown, 1-2 minutes per side.
“Texas toast just means a thicker slice.Greek toast has sesame seeds. I'm not getting in the middle of this, and i'm not going to tell customers what to call their product,” Marucci said. “But we call it Greek bread, at least our version of it.”
Place the pan on a burner and turn it on medium heat. Give it a minute or so to heat up. Spread butter on one side of the bread. While your skillet is heating up on the burner, use a butter knife to spread some butter on one side of your slice of bread.
Don't under or over toast your bread. Toasting it to golden brown will allow for even more spread-ability of the butter along with the ideal crunch. Plus, toasting brings an additional depth of warmth and comfort, and a golden-brown piece can even taste almost caramel-like.

It's prepared by slathering butter on both sides of the bread and then broiling or grilling it until golden brown. What type of bread is best for Texas Toast? My favorite bread to use is a big French loaf. Ask your bakery to slice it for you!
